Apollo begon als een MP3-speler. Het wordt herkend door zijn uitstekende MP3-decoderings kwaliteit, krachtige ondersteuning voor doorlopende weergave en geavanceerde afspeellijst mogelijkheden. Het ondersteunt verschillende bestandsformaten via zogenaamde input plug-ins. het schrijven van een invoer plug-ins is nogal ongecompliceerd (Zie de pagina met plug-ins voor meer informatie) en daarom kan Apollo eenvoudig worden gemaakt om nieuwe audioformaten te ondersteunen. De spelerroutines zorgen voor continu afspelen of zelfs een crossfade tussen tracks op alle ondersteunde indelingen en met alle uitvoertypen (standaard wave-out, DirectSound en WAV-bestandsuitvoer). Het is mogelijk om de uitvoer naar een WAV-bestand te richten, waardoor het bijvoorbeeld mogelijk is om Mp3's te decoderen om ze op een CD te schrijven. De spelerroutines bieden ook een realtime 16-bands equalizer voor alle bestandstypen.
Momenteel wordt Apollo geleverd met twee ingangs plug-ins: Apollo MPEG decoder en Apollo WAV decoder. De MPEG-decoder kan zowel MPEG-1-, MPEG-2-als MPEG-2,5-audiolayer 2-en 3-bestanden (d.w.z. MP2-en MP3-bestanden) verwerken. De decoder kan 32-bit, 24-bit, 16-bit en 8-bit data produceren. Ook Xing en Fraunhofer VBR Mp3's worden ondersteund. De MPEG-decoder wordt over het algemeen beschouwd als een van de beste wat betreft geluidskwaliteit (Zie Veelgestelde vragen voor meer informatie over de kwaliteit). De WAV-decoder ondersteunt RIFF WAV-bestanden met PCM of Microsoft ADPCM gecodeerde gegevens. Beide plug-ins ondersteunen Internet streaming.
Apollo biedt ook ondersteuning voor andere soorten plug-ins, namelijk visualisatie, digitale signaalverwerking (DSP) en plug-ins voor algemene doeleinden. Hun formaten zijn identiek met de bijbehorende Winamp 2. xx plug-ins. Dus alle bestaande Winamp plug-ins van deze drie categorieën moeten werken met Apollo. Ook Winamp input plug-ins die echt de geluidsgegevens te leveren in plaats van het direct regelen van het uitvoerapparaat worden ondersteund door Apollo.
